Our History

Formation of the Mounted Patrol

Formation of the Mounted Patrol
The patrol had its origin immediately following the Pearl Harbor disaster, in December 1941.
San Mateo County has many miles of rough, almost virgin country and unprotected coastline, accessible only on horseback. Thus, the Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County was born, dedicated to supporting the emergency services of the Sheriff and the Chief Fire Warden of the County.

The Mounted Patrol provided protection to our shores during the war period and provided search parties in these areas as required by the authorities. The Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County came into existence on March 31, 1942.
Transition to Equestrian Preservation
The Mounted Patrol acquired 23 acres of property in the heart of Woodside, California, and built one of the most beautiful outdoor rodeo and horseshow arena in California along with a permanent grandstand, separate warm-up arena, clubhouse and more recently,. 20-stall barn.
The modern Mounted Patrol operates as a center for equestrian improvement and excellence, a social club and a has a separately-administered 501(c)3 charitable foundation.
